CHAPTER 13

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Grandma Dottie asked.

“I am.” I was the only one who could take Beleth on, and we both knew it.

She disappeared into the artifact room and came back out a few minutes later loaded down with the demon texts the Enclave had in their collection, including the one with the prophecy. “If you’re going after Beleth, you need to understand who he is, how he operates, and most importantly, what his weaknesses are.”

“His weaknesses are the two weapons capable of killing him,” I said.

Grandma Dottie stacked the books in front of me. “You’re going to have to get close enough to use those weapons. To do that, you need to find the chink in his armor.” She was right.

She pulled the brass monocle out of her pocket and handed it to me. Not wanting to rely on Raum’s translations, I took it. After hours of searching, I closed the volume I’d been combing through and leaned back in my chair. Grandma Dottie looked up from the book she was skimming.

I pointed to the three demon books the Enclave had recovered. Volumes one and six had yet to be found. While we had a dearth of information about demon history, missing the beginning and end volumes left a lot of gaps in our knowledge. At the moment, we were trying to locate as many references to the hidden demon artifacts as we could. There was a lot to sift through.

My top priority was locating the missing war scythe or the dagger. I’d already gone up against the demon once and failed to yank him out of Masterson. Even if I could strengthen my necromancy powers enough to successfully tear the demon out of Masterson and send him back to hell, I preferred not to take any chances that he’d find his way back. That meant I needed at least one of the weapons capable of killing him.

Securing the shield that could deflect such a weapon was also high on my to-do list. If I got my hands on the weapons capable of killing Beleth, I didn’t want to chance him finding the shield and deflecting my blows. In addition to the weapons and the shield, there were also several mentions of other powerful artifacts that were taken from Beleth. Although the purpose each of them served wasn’t always clear, they were mentioned enough that I didn’t want to risk overlooking something that could prove important.

According to the text, the five remaining kings split the artifacts among them and then proceeded to squirrel them away in the human world for safekeeping. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a demon artifact treasure map anywhere in these old books. Even the references to the artifacts were vague.

“There’s too much information to sort through, and the mentions I have found are too vague to be helpful,” I complained. “Even if the memory tampering doesn’t muddle all of this in my brain, I’ll never be able to recall most of it.” I tapped my fingers on the thickest volume.
